The tag implication #46074 giant_ground_sloth -> sloth has been rejected.

Reason: giant ground sloths are a type of sloth, pretty self-explanatory

Today's sloths came from a different, though related, lineage of sloths. Basically, early sloths split into tree sloths and ground sloths. The former stayed small while the latter grew in size to their huge sizes. Ground sloths eventually died out on the American mainland during the Holocene extinction event some 12,000-10,000 years ago due to a combination of climate change (as it was the end of the last Ice Age) and possibly human hunting. The Caribbean ground sloth managed to stick around in the Antilles (the Caribbean islands) until historical times, somewhere around 1550 BC, when humans moved in.
