So the last few times when I tried to tag characters, it instead listed it as other tags even though I put the tags in the characters category. Anyone else have this issue?

Please try to make sure that you are following one of the methods below (courtesy of tsukemono).
Here are the visual guides on how to make new artist / character tags.
Method 1: https://imgur.com/a/rXe2zcp
Method 2, assumes the tag already exists: https://imgur.com/a/47T22Et
Method 3, assumes the tag does NOT exists: https://imgur.com/a/VLrOgK3

Note that there's a difference between methods 2 and 3: While prefixes like character: and artist: can change a tag's type, it only works on new tags since character:cat and artist:cat are the same tag as species:cat, as the prefix gets removed once the tags are actually applied, leaving only cat, cat, and cat. Some kind of difference is needed, which you have done with vancanto (character) and allan vancanto.
