Wouldn't it be possible to have two character embrace each other in this position, like so post #404520 ,without having sex? Pretty sure I've seen such a position being used for a clothed/nude couple simply kissing.
Or am I being silly.

You're not silly. It was a concern I had as well. But it didn't win out for a few reasons:
1, the need for consistency with keeping the *_position tags only for sex positions as a suffix. They are sex positions by definition and the majority of images by far follow that definition. And mixing uses of the same tag with the non-sexual but similar pose is a bit messy.
And 2, the few images of non-sexual-but-similar-pose might be better off tagged differently in any case. For instance, we wouldn't tag it spitroast when someone is bent over on a crowded subway just because there's fully clothed people standing at either end of them, unless there was somehow sex combined with that pose. And we don't tag train_position if 3 or more characters are dancing or standing in a close line back-to-front but no sex is happening. And we keep the from_behind tag for only if they're being penetrated "from behind" but we don't use it if it's just a reach_around or a hug_from_behind or just someone standing behind someone else, etc. So if it's not the sex position, then we tag it differently.
And the result of keeping these uses distinct is that both the sexual and the non-sexual situations end up being tagged a little bit clearer than they would be if we made them share tags. So I think it works better to keep it that way.
So, for anyone who's cuddling, hugging, kissing in a position similar to the "mastery_position" it can be tagged with straddling and sitting_on_lap. It's an accurate description of that pose in most cases, and if a searcher wants to they can -mastery_position and/or -sex to locate the much smaller group of images which are in a similar pose but aren't using it for sex. Which should work at least as well.
