Hard to say. "Pants" are always in plural. And "briefs" and "boxers". Interestingly Wikipedia fluently mixes plural and singular on "g-string": G-strings may also be worn by exotic or go-go dancers. As underwear, a G-string may be worn in preference to panties
Based on string wiki page, we should either use the plural for the "garment", as the singular is used for thread/cord/yarn kind of "string", or we should have string_(disambiguation).
A very related question is, how does one tell the difference between a thong, strings and a g-string?

A disambiguation is completely unnecessary here. There is a pretty clear difference between a string and a g-string, and the terms are never used interchangeably. Let’s not create another unnecessary disambiguation tag that nobody will ever clean up when a simple alias in this case works just fine.

You mean strings and g-string? Obviously this

(string)
is not interchangeable by this

(strings)
or this

(g-string)
And I'm not sure if this really should be the same as "string", or its own separate case:

There's at least one more case of "string" which I haven't yet encountered on e621-postings yet, though, which is character strings – probably most familiar in computer programming.
So should we have string for the thread kind of thing (and possibly also for musical string based instrument strings) and strings for the apparel, or should the apparel be g-string, which somewhat surprisingly doesn't seem to be used for guitars and piano yet, considering that there are 4700 cases of string_instrument. Suprisinly no string_puppet anywhere, although for strings we have these two:

You’re making this much more complicated than it needs to be. G-string is for the clothing, string is for any regular string that’s not clothing. And I really don’t think we need to tag every individual part of a guitar when there’s a guitar in an image… just tag guitar and leave it at that.
The last thing is called a marionette, btw.
