Topic: should ms_paint be copyright tag?

Posted under General

i had a brief discussion on the discord about why blender_(software) was marked as a copyright tag and i gather that's the general way to handle software.

if so, should ms_paint be a copyright tag?

possibly also flash, but flash could also just refer to the file format

Using a copyright tag type that way complicates the ability to use copytags:0 to search for original artwork that isn't based on a video game, film, manga, TV series, or other such franchise (ie fanart). What's the justification for using the copyright tag type to tag software used in the creation of the artwork when in almost all other cases the copyright tag type is used to label what franchise or company the artist's fanart is based on? Having it be a regular tag type doesn't depreciate the importance of the tag.

i don't know. i personally do not like that it is used in this way but this is the answer i got in discord. it's hit and miss if you search for other software: photoshop is copyright, blender is copyright, ms paint is not but microsoft_paint *is*, flash is not, autodesk maya is, poser is not (although it's an alias to 3d)

as an example, here's all the maya entries: https://e621.net/posts?tags=autodesk_maya

all of them were made with maya, none of them feature the maya logo or anything similar...if someone told me they were made with some other 3d software i wouldn't be able to tell the difference. i don't think it makes sense for maya to show up as copyright.

I'm pretty sure those software tags are only supposed to be used when there's UI or other visual elements from the actual software visible, it's not supposed to be a 'this was created with ...' tag (we don't tag photoshop or gimp or krita or paint.net on images that were drawn in those programs). Though I do notice a lot of people treat blender and sfm and other 3D modeling/animation software tags incorrectly like that.

I feel that we should be able to tag what program was used to produce the art. It allows the tags which would have little purpose otherwise to be used like the digital and traditional media tags. AFAIK that policy of only applying to logos is intended for image feed and gallery websites like Patreon and Furaffinity. It's simply not useful to tag where an art is posted. That is what the source field is for.

The art program used makes more sense as a Meta tag instead a Copyright IMO.

Yes, that is how those are generally used. ms_paint seems to be an exception, and the oldest posts make me think that it used to be called over 9000 hours in ms paint at some point.

MS Paint was admittedly commonly used at one point, but art made with it is not distinct from many other similar software. I don't see how it is taggable by twys.

If it were up to me, I'd untag most of it and only leave the ones that show the interface, or someone using MS Paint, etc. Such as post #1938453.
