.. Many, but not all, of the taggings of recursion conform with the equivalence you are proposing.
Examples of other recursion:
post #291385 , in which the recursion is conceptual, not visual.
post #200627 -- a mix of conceptual and visual recursion, no picture-in-picture effect.
post #15251 -- like droste in that the character is holding pictures of a character holding .. and taking a bite out of these pictures, but unlike droste in that none of the pictures depict that character.
post #422476 -- the recursion is physical, not visual
post #157008 -- as above
post #242330, or maybe not -- the 'picture in picture' is not *obviously* droste, mainly because it entirely lacks rendering while the 'picture' has rendering.
post #8366 -- recursion is textual (unlike post #118135, which separately contains both visual and textual recursion)
This is a large enough chunk of recursion that I'm definitely -1 on aliasing it, unless some equally valid term is found to apply to pictures such as the above.
Considering this, I would be, for the time being, +1 on implicating droste_effect to recursive. I think that is unambiguously true per the definitions of droste effect found on the wiki and in google.
...
Posts that are probably wrongly tagged recursion:
post #12576 -- AFAICS 'spatial warping' (ie portal, a tagging it does have) is what the person who tagged recursion was really trying to say.
