Reason:

Snep is a cutesey name for snow leopard and at least one snep tagged image was not tagged with snow leopard. Since they are the same thing it makes more sense to alias than imply.

snep is also a nice shorthand for searching.

-1 snep doesn't sound like it associates at all to snow_leopard, and should instead be invalidated as far as I'm concerned. Also looking at the a post tagged snep,

buck -> buck_(disambiguation)

That tag could be added when someone is talking about names, cervids, money ect.

Snep sounds too close to the "internet" variant of snake, "snek". I also thought of a giant pair of scissors and not a snow leopard. Similar to "derg" it isn't immediately clear what it is short for. -1.

While short-hand is considered for searching, it's limited to those that make sense. For example, roo aliases to kangaroo as it is clear what it is short for.
