Topic: I made an edit and don't know if it could be posted (New to E621.)

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

While going through E621, I found a line art drawing. I decided to look at the comments and noticed someone who said that they "someone please make a colored version". Because I was bored and had nothing to do, I decided to do just that. However I'm not sure if it could be posted. I basically colored it in (with no shading) and made a few changes to the drawing. I'm new to E621 so I'm not sure if this is a thing I should ask about, if it isn't I'm sorry!

Should I add a link to the original or?...

If you didn't have permission to edit it, you basically stole their drawing. Good work

Would it be against the site rules to publish this however (if it even got approved that is)?

Wat. Making a personal edit to color in a drawing is not theft. It's not even copyright infringement (if kept personal). It's a completely normal thing to do for people starting out with art to teach themselves with, same as referencing and, yes, even tracing. Where it can become copyright infringement (not theft) is if they distribute it without permission. Given that they're asking here, it's somewhat safe to assume they haven't distributed it yet.

LewdDude22, it's best to first look to see if the original artist has said if they allow others to share color edits of their sketches or lineart, and if they've not said, politely ask them. You can also check E6's Avoid Posting list to see if edits of their work are DNP.

As for the edit itself, E6 doesn't allow low-quality edits. We obviously can't say whether your edit is low-quality or not without being able to see it.

What if you cannot contact the artist? Found the artists Twitter but I don't think it is active anymore. Just tweeted them but just making sure in case.

Well, you could check to see if there are other existing edits of their works, but you need to be really careful about that since they may not be aware of it. Legally speaking, if you can't get permission, you don't have it. It just comes down to a question of whether they actually care or not, and no one but them can really tell you that.

Okay, by the way I really appreciate the help!

Also just wondering, but is there a way that I could possibly see if it would be considered as decent quality? Like showing to a certain person, or is that only done in publishing it on here?

basically, there isn't any rules against editing something beyond it needing to be of at least the same quality or better than the original, and the original artwork not belonging to someone who has a DNP status of No edits are permitted. A good way to see if it's passable quality in this instance is to message a member of staff asking if it's appropriate, otherwise you will be taking your chances of it simply being deleted by a member of staff. If it does get approved, and you don't ask the artist if it's okay to share there is always the chance said artist might request a takedown on the image. So before sharing I would suggest asking the artist in question of the image if they are okay with the edit.

If your coloring is larger than the original, it would of needed to have been relined. Otherwise it will be an artificial upscale I believe

So the official answer is that edits are acceptable as long as they are not going againts our guidelines. With edits, there's seperate section for those and edits are handled as quality of edit and not the artwork as whole.
uploading_guidelines#quality

Also you cannot be tagged as artist on the post unless the edited part is collaboration level (extremely rare) and original author has the full rights to use our takedown system if they do not wish for us to host edits of their work.

I assume your account has to be something along the lines of a week to upload however?

Somehow forgot to say, but thanks. Also one of them said you can show it to a member of staff and ask if it would be passable, is that true cause I would hate to waste time.

We have discord server (Chat on top) which would be easiest place to ask.
