Topic: Tag Alias: palico -> felyne

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

-1, I'd rather see it be an implication than an alias.

Palicoes are just lynians that chose to accompany a hunter. So while all Palicoes are lynians, not every felyne is a Palico.

There's also an argument to be made that an implication be better for ease of searching and disambiguation as well.
If you only tag pictures of felynes clearly armed with hunter gear (for the purpose of Tag What You See) with palico, you allow people to find images specifically of the "partner" felynes, while felyne -palico would only show the "wild" felynes (or at least ambiguous by lack of clothing), with just felyne catching everything for those that don't care.

For example, the felyne in post #1706562 is identified as a Palico by his armor, while post #4117673 appears to be just a random felyne.

I will admit, I'm not sure where this would leave the melynx tag, as the only visible difference is fur color, and both are seen as Palicoes in the games.

Edit: Second example was replaced with a higher quality, updated link.

I've never really played monster hunter, as a disclaimer, so I might be off key here.

A Lynian is a type of 'monster' that... seems to only be described as "short"... okay. The wiki says there are three "groups" of lynian:

1 - Catlike (Malynx, Felyn, and Grimalkyne)
2 - Humanoid (Shakalaka and Gajalaka)
3 - Unique (Uruki)

Gosh, Japan comes up with some fun ideas, but logic need not apply...

Okay.

1 - Catlike

Felyne - bipedal cat, capable of human language. Usually light furred.
Melynx - bipedal cat, capable of human language. Usually dark furred. And sometimes they steal things. Oh. Hm
Shakalaka - Small green skinned humanoids, that always wear a mask.

I am honestly not sure how Shakalaka are Lynians. they seem to have 2 fingers and a thumb with permanently "out" claws", fur only on their shoulders and ankles.. while Felyne/Melynx seem to have 5 fingers/thumb, with retractable claws, and 4 toed feet. They also have tails, which the Shakalaka lack.

2 - humanoid

Grimalkyne - described as "lynians" and appear to be bipedal lynxes
Gajalaka - resembles Shakalaka, being a small red skinned humanoid that always wears a mask. These don't seem any more or less humanoid than the Shakalaka.

they SEEM to have been in a more recent game that then Shakalaka, due to the higher res graphics used. They have more fingers/toes than the Shakalaka, again, with permanently 'out' claws. These ones are wearing a furry loincloth -- I can actually see a 'tie' near the middle, so it would be 'safe' to assume that the furry tufts at arms and ankles are also clothing...

3- Uruki - This is not a cat. It looks more ape like.

So.. my conclusions:

Lynian seems to be defined as a intelligent species. They tend to have complex societies and have language. Lynian could perhaps be defined as "the Speaking peoples" -- the original japanese can be translated as "Beastman species"

Felyne is a species.
Melynx is the same species as Felyne. Except they're also thieves sometimes. and have black fur, sometimes. *sigh*
Grimalkyne are genetic cousins to the Felyne. Not quite Felyne, but not quite not.

Shakalaka is some sort of goblinoid.
Gajalaka is probably related to the Shakalaka.

Uruki are a third group only tangentially related to the other two.

okay. Research over.

Soo... Lynian should not be a tag.
Felyne and Melynx probably SHOULD be be one tag. but since they're a baddie sometimes I guess okay.

Palico is a job role, like "hunter" or "scout"... it.. probably should imply felyne, but what if someone draws a non felyne as a Palico? (but it might be an acceptable measure of error) Palico should be a general tag, not a species tag, as it is now.
