Topic: Aliases and Implications related to Stockings

Alias knee-highs -> knee_highs (or vice-versa).
Alias kneehighs -> knee_highs (or whichever one was chosen for above)

knee_highs (or whichever one was chosen above) implies stockings

thigh_highs currently implies legwear, but maybe more accurately implies stockings, where stockings then implies legwear.

Optionally alias thigh-highs and thighhighs to thigh_highs (but these currently don't exists as tags like knee-highs and kneehighs do).

I've been looking at this for a while, as part of a broader restructuring of legwear.

A lower-level problem is nailing down clean definitions for tags, so they can be organized in a logical way and so people can figure out which one to use without too much ambiguity. Unfortunately, clothing terms can get pretty fuzzy in this regard: you'd assume that stockings are always thigh-high, but the existence of knee-high stockings in real life makes this part that much more difficult.

A related problem is simply not having enough information to say for sure what's being shown in an image. For example, what someone sees as a thigh-high sock, someone else might see as a thigh-high stocking. If the material can't be identified, then you could end up with both tags being used (and looking like they're contradicting each other), or one tag winning out (likely at the whim of the most recent tagger) and leaving out a technically-correct tag (and therefore making it less searchable).

As of this writing, an issue with thigh_highs is that thigh_boots (1684) and thigh_socks (1654) are implicated to it (as well as wool_thigh_highs (0)). To change thigh_highs to imply stockings would require de-implicating those and cleaning up a ton of posts.

Thigh_highs is primarily used for when it is hard to tell what kind of clothing it actually is other than it extends up to thigh level. It shouldn't imply anything other than legwear.

I try to look for detail indicators when tagging stockings. If the article looks more fuzzy or like it has a fold at the top, I consider them as socks. If they appear more flat against the leg, or are translucent, then I tend to tag as stockings. If it is really difficult to tell due to low quality clothing details, I might tag as stockings or just default to thigh highs.

I consider anything at or below the knee as socks or footwear. May not be the most accurate practice. Heh...
