common way to describe having a raised tail.

Is it? I've never heard of that term before.

It's more common in animal breeding/behavior talk. I've mostly seen feral artists/fans use it.

Also flagging

for reference i personally always seen flagging to be having the tail raised in such a way to be at least roughly perpendicular(90 degree bend or more) to the angle of the rest of the spine, not just any raised tail but i guess that isnt too important^^;

worth noting if your dog is doing this then they are likely be aroused...

First off, Darou, flagging does not always - or often, even - involve the tail being lifted straight up. In actuality, the flagging behavior generally involves the tail being held to the side. Holding the tail straight up is indicative of several things, but not sexual receptivity.

Second, the tail can't be raised 90 degrees straight up. That would break the bones. It usually is an upward curve.

So... flagging definitely ought not be aliased to raised_tail. Not sure on flagged_tail because it could be confused for flagging behavior.

Considering though, that flagged_tail only has two posts right now, I don't think it's even worth the effort to alias it or do anything like that. Could just be cleaned out manually.

not sure on "flagging" since it seems potentially vague. i still maintain on "flagged_tail" though–i nearly tagged something with it today, as it was the first term that came to mind when trying to think of "raised_tail"

Raised_tail doesn't mean 'tail straight up' though? Plenty of raised_tail posts don't involve that at all and include slightly lifted tails, tails lifted and held to the side, and tails held straight out behind (when it would otherwise droop to the ground). Flagging does frequently involve the tail being held out to the side, it also involves holding it up against gravity, so it's still a raised_tail. It's kind of a moot point since, as you pointed out, neither flagging nor flagged_tail have many posts.

Fun, but kinda off topic facts about your cat's tail and you.

Can't speak for dogs, but for cats an upright tail is happiness and enthusiasm. A trembling tail is excitement. a cat's wagging tail is focus and intent.

SO if your kitty's tail goes straight up like a flagpole, they're happy to see you! if it's trembling a little, they're also excited. Basically it's like "Yay! You're here! Hello my human! Yay!" Especially if the top of their tail is curved over like a question mark. :)

Kitty tail swishing is a bit harder to understand because it's more of a signal of intensity. If he's staring at you while you pet him or staring away, and his tail is lashing around, he's not very happy, and would probably appreciate it if you stopped. But if he does that while playing with his favorite feather wand or something, he's really 'into' the hunting game! :)

There was a video a few months ago of a cat climbing up a rock climbing wall-- her tail was swishing and flipping about frantically. Some people mistook this for anger and unhappiness, but it was actually just excitement and pleasure to be climbing. :)

Cats do pretty good at getting their tail up close to 90 degrees, but, tha'ts neither here nor there.

Was trying to remember if there was another name for it.. apparently in horses there seem to be two definitions 'just holding the tail high' while, say, running about, and holding the tail off and to the side, as a mare does while in heat.

post #1411311 post #1369498 <-- Flagged tails.
post #1409390 post #1389509 <-- also flagged tails

It's worth noting that flagged_tail has 3 posts, and flagging has 13, so these are not exactly high traffic tags.

And ultimately.. is there much difference in these pictures and some combination of raised_tail, presenting pussy/presenting_anus/presenting_hindquarters?

I mean, for the more mare-like tail out-of-the-way, I"m surprised tail_aside isn't a tag....

Man, I almost started to type the exact same post I posted 6 months ago.

Still dunno what to do with flagged_tail, flagging or tail_aside. Bump for discussion.

IMO, Flagged_tail, and flagging are a little too ambiguous in meaning... and while having a tag specifically for the animal-like behavior of moving one's tail aside as a sexual proposition might be neat, It's WAY too subjective to decide if it's a convenient angle or sexy proposition. Likewise, it might be nice to have a tag for the "horse tail is up" (the "flagged tails" I showed above) but I don't know how you'd name that and be uunique and obvious from 'tail up'

....the best I came up with was something like happy_tail which could be used for examples of animal-like body language indicating happiness.... an erected tail, wagging tails, the kittycat's "tail upright" etc...
