Topic: Tag Alias: red_cross -> +

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

-1 from me. IMHO + should be retagged with "red_cross" instead.

There's also the Christian cross that † was aliased to (I don't think any get tagged + though). Iron_cross is actually probably more relevant now that I think about it but I don't see any of those either.

I'm not sure how I feel about the alias, but it does seem like that's how it's being used at least.

I think sticking with + might be the best. Because "red cross" is a common nickname in the USA for the fairly well known "american red cross" organization, so it could cause confusion or mistaken for the organization instead of being for the symbol. Also, there are some instances where the cross is white or another color, so "red_cross" as a tag wouldn't fit those. And then there's the factor that "cross" as a word is too strongly associated with the religious cross shape and likely to be misunderstood far too often if the word was used in a tag for the + symbol. So for a lot of reasons, I think so far + makes the better tag between the two.

I'm not talking about aliasing "+" to red_cross, I'm talking about manually going through posts tagged with "+" and retagging them with "red_cross".

And then either alias "+" with invalid_tag, or add a wiki entry noting that it's not intended to be used as the Red Cross symbol, but as the addition symbol.

✚ is a more correct symbol if you insist in aliasing "red_cross" to a symbol.

✚ may be more correct (and much more obvious), but we are trying to move away from using "keyboard-unfriendly unicode", so I don't think it would happen.

There's also the red cross uses that Johnson and Johnson sued the American Red Cross for using on their medical supplies.

Completely unrelated: In 2008, Sabrina Johnson's family tried to sue Johnson and Johnson after she was blinded by Steven-Johnson syndrome due to taking ibuprofen. The disease is actually named after someone who published a paper on it in 1922.

Alias approved.

Can we unalias this and imply instead? There are a lot of different types of crosses, from the Swedish White Cross, the medical Red Cross, Christian Crosses, etc. I would prefer to be able to browse them separately at times.

Was it every really mistagged? If it was, red_+ would have worked better.

My suggestion:

red_cross is maybe a bit too specific, due to it not always being red (often white), but still depicts the same concept. How about medical_cross instead?

Out of curiosity; what is the Swedish White Cross? I never heard of that before and was wondering if I should feel bad about it.

They white + is actually the Swedish national symbol, not the red cross. Anybody wearing or waving a white cross is referring to Sweden, not medicine.

Are you talking about the early Swedish cross flag which was supposedly white, or simply the nordic flag pattern? I'm starting to feel bad :|

Wait what the heck? Now I'm getting my crosses mixed up. It's the flags of Denmark and Switzerland that had white crosses.

Well, that explains that, I figured I should at least have heard about my own national symbols :P
