Topic: Tag Implication: ipod -> portable_music_player

Bumping this one for more discussion.

There's no doubt that an iPod is a portable_music_player, but this is a copyright tag rather than a general one so technically iPod accessories(??) and just the presence of the iPod branding in an image would be enough to add the tag.

...there doesn't really seem to be any examples of this right now though, but if we look at a tag like playstation_4 it doesn't imply game_console but instead the ps4_console tag does. (which is very underused just like the other *_console tags but that's not really the point) While they don't currently exist, images like this could definitely exist but with the iPod branding instead:

However, I don't really want to suggest something like ipod_(device), which would currently have 100% overlap with ipod, either.

I don’t see why we really need ipod to be a copyright tag. Typically the word just refers to the device itself, and the only copyright we need is for the company that makes the device; in this case, apple_inc.

The difference between this and the consoles might be that, while all iPods (and Apple products in general) are always branded with the standard Apple logo, each iteration of the PlayStation console actually gets a slightly different logo. So you can’t really have the “iPod logo” or any “iPod branding” that isn’t just generic Apple branding, but you can have a post with PS4 branding which is different from PS3 and PS5 branding. Likewise (and even more so) for the Nintendo consoles, where the Wii, Switch, GameCube, and Gameboy systems have all had vastly different logos.

However, Xbox has been using pretty much the same logo from the beginning, so this wouldn’t really apply to them. And it would be a bit weird to not treat the console manufacturers the same in this regard.

But regardless, that’s a discussion for another thread, perhaps. As for this one, I think all the Apple products should be moved to the general tag category and given the proper implications based on what sort of device it is.

i agree with scalie that ipod should just be a general tag, i can't imagine any ipod "branding" that would both doesn't feature the ipod while also being specific to the ipod and not just general apple advertising that doesn't need the ipod tag

even parodies of the famous sillouette ads have ipods in them, and even though these aren't tagged with the general pmp tag, i don't see why the can't be

heck, looking through ipod -portable_music_player i see a 0 examples of ipod "branding" that doesn't feature the ipod device itself, but i see way more players that i would question if they even are ipods

and i ain't saying that peeps using the ipod tag as they would the portable_music_player tag is acceptable, it makes sense since the ipod was so popular that people started calling any and all digital music players and ipod, but i ain't saying that it's acceptable in e6

PS4 branding shouldn't get a PS4 tag, neither should iPod branding.
