Topic: I am losing control of my sleeping schedule

Posted under Off Topic

Lately I have been staying awake late to the point where I am only sleeping 3 to 5 hours a day. I have fallen asleep while commuting to work, I have been sitting at work staring at the screen for minutes while doing nothing until someone "wakes me up", I constantly mess up sentences and omit words when writing and I haven't worked out as much as I should.

What can I do to get back some self control in this area?

It's already 1:13 here, but I don't feel like sleeping at all. I want to surf some more and read all those books that I still need to read!

If you find a way to correct this, let me know. My sleep schedule has turned to shit recently and I get about 4 hours of sleep a day.

Going by only the title, since you are "loosing control", you should cease doing so immediately and reassert it. However, you clearly meant "losing control", which suits your actual post.

That's okay. I'm bilingual: I speak English and bad English.

Linux is a kernel. If you meant to type "GNU/Linux", then yes. Which should have been blindingly obvious, since I said "bash".

I work in catering which means that every week they tell me when I'll be working. It can start anywhere from 7am and end as late as 3am. So, it's hard to get any kind of sleeping pattern down.
I tried to keep myself regular for a good long while, settling into patterns maybe for a couple weeks at most before i had some ridiculous shift.

Know what I do now? I sleep when I'm tired and wake when I'm not. Trying to force yourself into a routine only results in stress.
Remember what Bob Marley tells us: Don't worry, be happy.

I've dealt with sleep issues before too, and unfortunately my "medicine" isn't legal, save for in a few states. Another less favored choice is booze, but it sucks needing to use that to sleep. :I

Sounds like a mild case of DSPS (Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome). Basically what's happening is your circadian rhythm (the thing that makes you sleepy/wakeful each day) has been elongated beyond its regular 24-hour cycle, probably to somewhere around 25 to 26 hours. This is, of course, a problem because most of the rest of the world (including your job) runs on a 24 hour day/night period.

So what can you do?

Well, as you've seen, trying to just mash the one into the other doesn't work too well, so you're going to have to find a way to shrink your internal clock back down to 24 hours. The easiest way to do this is to reduce your exposure to zeitgebers (the signals around you that let your body know what it should be doing) that are telling your body it should be awake, especially when it should be getting ready to sleep. Your biggest targets are probably going to be bright lights, loud noise, and social interaction. In addition, things like an irregular eating and exercise schedule can confuse your body as to what time it thinks it is.

TLDR:

Turn off the lights and reduce your computer monitor's brightness in the evenings, get a pair of earmuffs or nice noise-reducing headphones if you live somewhere busy, try to spend some time alone before you go to bed (that means internet forums too =.=), and do your best to eat and exercise at the same times each day. If none of that works, you may want to see an actual somnologist. Good luck.

Derp. What I get for making it manually I guess.

It always starts like this. First you don't sleep normally. You stay more and more longer in front of your pc. Then you start to desynchronize with real time, to the point you don't remember what day or month is it. If you cross that line: welcome to the dark side.

Beneficial effect of the dark side:

-Unlimited time to do what you want
-No one to stop you doing anything
-Everything doesn't matter

Disadvantages effects of the dark side:

-Fired from your job
-family has quit (unless they are on the dark side too)
-cash is gone
-potential weight gaining
-Forgetting what the sun is
-General degradation of you health by lack of physical exercises, lack of sleep and lack of a appropriate nourishment

This, you can also hard reset the clock but you shouldn't do this every other week.
To hardreset, stay awake for 24h hours, start eating at the time you are supposed to wake up normally, get the last meal with some easy wine approx. 3-4 hours before you are supposed to go to sleep (based on how long you normally sleep).
An example would be, you need to get up at 8 o'clock AM, stay awake from friday evening to saturday morning, first meal at 8 o'clock AM, if you need 9h of sleep, last meal needs to be around 7-8 o'clock PM.
Then do what MashCr said, make sure you are alone, in a dark, slightly cold, good ventilated room without noises and then go to sleep at around 10-11 PM.
Also, get away from any sort of display 2 hours before you want to sleep and do something boring like reading a book, this helps you to relax your eyes, don't grab a big meal, rather only a glass of milk before sleep.
Afterwards, keep the times you wake up and go to sleep as constant as possible.
Oh, caffeine needs 4-6 hours to get out of your blood, taurine up to 10-12 hours, plan these drinks in if you want to consume them.

Good luck.

Hah, I usually don't mind a hectic sleep schedule, I can run off almost nothing...that was, until I got back to finishing classes and working out. Now my mood and state of awareness are being destroyed by this awful way in which I find time to sleep. To make this worse, due to an unfortunate series of events, I now have to start looking for a new job as well. Yay.

...I should probably get to sleep...like now.

I got real bad sleep problem, doctor said it's because I was taking my meds past noon, which I guess is a bad thing. Add that to time change and I average about 1 to 2 hours of sleep a day, but somehow I manage to function properly, or at least I think I do, for all I know I'm in a coma right now and typing this with my mind

Hey, just go to the store and pick up some melatonin

Shit really works, at least for me.
Basically its like insulin for sleep.

yes. Its a hormone that regulates a bodily function, JUST LIKE INSULIN. It also is in function with an opposite hormone that wakes you up, just like glucagon is used to raise the blood glucose level.
