Aliasing bikini_bottoms to bikini_bottom is like aliasing panties to panty or jeans to jean. That should be reversed.

No it's not. The base article is bikini, non-plural, and the lower part of the bikini is thus bikini bottom. Clothing isn't automatically pluralized, see underwear, thong, bra, sock, glove, etc.

Not really, since it's the bottom part of the bikini as compared to the top half which covers the breasts, unlike panties or jeans which aren't half of a clothing ensemble.

I've never in my life heard anybody say "I'm wearing a bikini bottom" only "I'm wearing bikini bottoms"
I don't know if it's some kind of regional difference or what, but the idea of somebody saying "a bikini bottom" is incredibly strange to me, would you also wear a swimming trunk?

Trunks are their own thing, a type of shorts typically used for sports activities, with swimming trunks being indicative of the purpose of the trunks. In this vein, bottom refers to the lower section of something, so "bikini bottom" is indicative of the part of a bikini. Adding pluralization when changing "bikini" to "bikini bottoms" doesn't make much sense (whereas changing "bikinis" to "bikini bottoms" would).
