Animation thumbnails: No longer able to identify animation type from thumbnail

In category: General

(€ - Except for flash's still.)

I do like that gifs are now easily identified as being animated now. But now webm files look the same as gif posts. This is mostly an issue for mobile users (im using an ipad) since they do not play webm. Furthermore on my particular device, the post shows up as a low res image and it takes you a moment to realise you have wasted precious seconds of your life on that page. :( I know that you can search by file format but its a bit annoying when you are casually browsing under something like "popular".

Anyone? :b

Sorry this post is so lazy i typed with one hand because I'm holding my massive pita in my other hand.

Literally just noticed this feature, when did it happen? Today? I like it! It's great for me because it makes noticing gifs easier, and animation is always a bonus in my eyes.

Easy. Add more labels.

  • SLIDE for anything with the slideshow tag (mostly GIFs).
  • VIDEO or WEBM for .webm files.

You can actually play webm on an ipad with some video apps like oplayer and vlc.

Are we to expect thumbnails for flash soon too?
Otherwise the overlapping flash text on the giant text flash thumbnail just seems redundant.

It's planned but likely won't happen this round ever.

so you've figured out how to automate flash thumbnailing?

Sadly, no. We're still not really closer to a useful solution, but it's on the plate to get done someday.

Nevermind, Kira says it's not currently possible to automate because the software for that hasn't been updated in half a decade.

I just want to say I love the webm thumbnail feature.
All animations need thumbnails.

As for the flash animations, I suspect making thumbnails can never be automated, because they're interactive (and often begin with a menu and/or credits page).
It has to be done by hand, so what you'd need is a janitor who makes thumbnails for flashes.

Is it more important to have thumbnails for the most popular flashes (which may have been uploaded years ago), or for new ones? (that may not even be approved yet)

I do agree that webm and gif need to have different tags as it is still pretty significant on mobile.

Aside from that I really like the new thumbnails and the floating bit that makes them easier to find in a list.

Thank you for labeling animated type:gif posts.

Why is this even necessary?
e621 should be able to detect multi-frame gifs automatically.

slideshow
Should actually clean that up because everyone keeps tagging those with animated.

Pending change: WEBM posts now have a 'WEBM" badge, and animated gifs have a "ANIM" badge.

To answer Munkelzahn:
It can detect multi-frame gifs, but the duration system is still pending testing, so there isn't a better metric to rely on right now that is readily accessible when thumbnails are being generated. So checking for the tag was the fastest(and reasonably accurate) method for the time being.

Nice! This is the reason I use e621 (as opposed to other furry or NSFW art sites). It's so organized and it's constantly being updated.

So, why not requiring a manual thumbnail upload with flash posts then? Or even just a field where you can specify an ID of other post that's going to be used as a thumbnail if there's already an uploaded static pic. Browsing animations is a hell if you have few pages of white rectangles. I literally use Derpibooru or just google to find E621 links to animations, because it is so extremely inconvenient here.

There is now a different badge for WEBM and ANIM. I have also removed the FLASH badge as it was redundant. Change deployed.

Would it be possible to add this for APNGs too?

what about avatars
post #1397037
anynir 's avatar is animated, but there's no ANIM over it

I don't think users would be happy with ANIM slapped on their avatars.

Make it an opt-in setting?

I don't want to mess with avatars. They are already kind of fragile. Also it would take up a decent chunk of the avatar space, so I think it would be an overall loss. And no, it's not going to be an option. No more options.

Thank you so much for all your hard work <3

Since we're talking .webm files, I've got a request: IE and Edge users already get a message on linking them to the download that enables .webm in IE, but I discovered today that you can get .webm videos working in Edge using this extension from Microsoft from the Store: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9N5TDP8VCMHS

Could we get a link to that added as well as the IE link? It's been an absolute godsend!

There's also an MPEG-2 extension in there that gets .mkv files and the like working correctly, I really don't know why Microsoft don't advertise these things more.

Can confirm that both VP8/Vorbis and VP9/Opus seem to work perfectly after installation. VP9/Opus was actually working before as well, but only on Youtube.

Not sure about edge, but of course apple has money in mind. Much better to just force everyone to use their format specifically, user experience doesn't matter as users most likely complain to websites.
