Didn't you read forum #236324 and forum #236386? Just get rid of the numbers at the start of the url so it's "media.tumblr".

it WERKS now.

And yep, it definitely feels like Tumblr will patch this soon.

If the _raw files are only available for posts after a certain date, that means Tumblr must've deliberately enabled this option at some point. Why would they disable it again?

God dammit. This new thing ruined my additional upload point in the queue. On the positive side, seems the art is getting a lot more high quality.

Maybe to reduce load on their servers?

Proof or just a feeling?

Because if it's more than just intuition we need to step up our game and get this done.

A lot.

Jeez, so for the past 2 weeks the gallery has been nothing but reposts, but only of images so large they're unviewable even on a 4k monitor

Show reduced samples - Large images will be replaced with a smaller version, which may reduce image quality, but loads faster. Good for mobile devices or slow/metered internet connections.

Learn it. Love it.

And blacklist "missing_sample absurd_res" if any slip through.

Tumblr better not fix this.

Aside from it being a dick move and also truly fucking up artists images with blurry ass resizing, there is ZERO need for this, as it wouldn't improve anything at all, and this doesn't put a heavy load on their huge, well maintained servers.

Again, there is no reason why tumblr would do that, HELL, they probably don't even know this feature exists, knowing tumblr.

I'm sure messages from Artists who relied on the downscaling for keeping high res versions to paying viewers might change their mind if they got enough complaints.

Were there a lot of artists relying on the downscaling? I know there's at least a few of them, but enough to make a difference?

Exactly.
And since various <num>.media links stopped suddenly working after this became public knowledge, it's clear that Tumblr is doing something about it. Because from what I've heard, those had worked for years up until now.

Or it could simply be that they are suddenly getting insane amount of traffic, so they have opted to keep regular visitors user experience uneffected by this, keeping most servers only serving stuff embedded on sites themselves.

Because there are at least couple other boorus also updating their posts, so imagine suddenly hundreds of users just trying to get files which can tens of times larger from earlier requests and all of them hitting at once instead of slow pace can hit site performance somewhat even as big as this.

So until something is officially stated, all everything is speculation.

Could it be possible to implement a script that makes it so when users try to url upload 1280 images, it uploads the raw version instead?

I modified a Greasemonkey script to redirect tumblr image links to the raw version, you can install it into your browser if you'd prefer to only see raw images from now on: https://ghostbin.com/paste/h3c6f

JAKXXX3, i've found your script only redirects to the _1280 version instead of redirecting to _raw. if one of you programming types could fork and fix this, it would add up to one happy customer.

Here's a tip when searching for higher-res versions of art from tumblrs that have been deleted. If the tumblr link has a description, google it with the word tumblr at the end and you might run up on some reblogs. This link is dead, but if you google "more ms cow pix lines by megasweet tumblr", you get some reblogs where you can find the original image. This is useful if reverse image searching doesn't turn anything up or just leads you to porn blogs that repost the smaller versions instead of reblogging from the source.

Has anyone found a way to utilize an image's attributes to find the raw image source as it is stored under Tumblr's URL scheme? There are many, many posts featuring links to deleted Tumblr uploads that have no direct link to modify, which would make this a very useful tool.

I've used PowerShell in an attempt to look at the hash and see if that could be translated into a functional URL, but both length and content seem entirely different. If someone more tech-savvy than I am could give this a shot and inform us, it'd be an immense help for preserving images which otherwise will forever only have lower-quality versions floating around.

You, my friend, are a genius.

Guess that the old adage of "once something's on the internet, it's never going away" really DOES apply to everything, huh?

Tumblr turned off access to NSFW tumblrs for anything not logged in--this includes search engines. I'm not sure if they have stopped searchbots entirely or if an engine could be made to log itself in.

uh oh... that's not good...

i was just about to try and save the "raw" version of this pic but i hit a problem.

right click > view image > change 1280 to raw > uh oh...404?

and i checked this and this too...

3 404's in a row isn't a coincidence is it? did tumblr catch on to us?

You have to delete the 68 in front of "media" for it to work now.

huh, ok and it looks like that was already the full size for that sonic pic.

I made a slight change to the userscript I've been using to remove the numbers in front of "media". I've never messed with regex before, but it seems to do the trick just fine.

To those of you doing the job of replacing old tumblr images with their raws, and are also sectioning in the old comments on those posts: deleted images now preserve their comments and the ability to vote on them. You can now just link the deleted post for the old comments, instead of the more cumbersome section inserts.

Yet another mystery that was added recently...

I've been doing that for a long time
"better version of post #12345"
and people were always complaining about it

When you asked about browsers, it was because you were planning on updating your better version extension, right? What's the status?

I wasn't saying... that, I was saying something like "here is post #12345 's comments" on the BVAS'd post.
