Remove alias: haunches -> crouching

In category: Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

haunches should be used for feral-like hips and legs.

A few images that fit under haunches, but not crouching:

Aren't those just thick_thighs?

The current alias of haunchescrouching seems odd, but so does the idea of only tagging it for that specific type. Humans have haunches, as do most other creatures. There's nothing specifically feral about it.

What Corgi Bread said here: forum #72497

"I'm not really sure how you made the correlation from a body part to the act of crouching."

I can't find any explanation for why this was ever approved. It may have been approved based on how it was being used at the time.

I'm willing to remove the alias as an experiment - to build up a sample size and decide what to do from there.

Probably just the best fit at the time, yes. Some admins have always been reluctant to make aliases to invalid_tag.

And this one definitely doesn't seem valid. The suggested usage sounds like a more vague alternate to thick_thighs and wide_hips. Most generic body part tags have been invalidated for a good reason, and I don't see a single post on the current first page where haunches aren't visible.

There was a discussion in the "do we have a tag for this" thread, would feral_hips be a better description? I'm specifically looking for situations where the calf and hip are drawn as a single semicircle.

not so much attaching but rather simply not defined in the particular drawing style(saving on the number of strokes needed by defining the back side of the leg from butt to foot with a single continuous line rather then multiple lines following proper contours), and yes as you described that is the common definition of haunches and for what you are speaking of generally you can only tell thighs and feet apart, as such it can apply here. note that the visual illusion of this in feral animals irl are also called haunches.

Maybe that was some kind of confusion involving the expression "sitting on haunches" since it basically means crouching, at least for humans; for quadrupeds it is more like sitting on hind legs (example ).

I can only guess that it was accidentally approved when going through a big tag batch. It's really easy to do that without noticing.

Yeah, that could be it. Google image search results for 'haunches' is full of crouching humans. At least that goes to show that I'm not the only one who's using the term for non-ferals.

Back when it was tagged, it was used for posts such as these:

Hm. So what would be a tag for non-human hips?

When a character has elongated feet and shortened ankles / thighs, such as a horse, there are a whole bunch of new anatomy terms used for the equivalent areas to a human.

I usually refer to such legs as hocked legs. The hock is the "backwards knee" of horses, birds, etc. and is actually the animal's heel. To most people, this is the most distinctive difference between a human leg and an animal one.

That's not quite what I'm looking for. In my case the calfs and thighs are drawn as one.

Those are just hocked legs in a simplified chibi style. Friendship is Magic does it for instance

I suppose it's a good start. Can you post some sample images?

The problem with this definition is it doesn't take into account plantigrade characters with feral legs or digitigrade characters with anthro legs. The shape is more to do with the back of the leg and knee than anything.

Yes, that middle image especially.

Looks like semi-anthro is a thing, but its use is frowned upon.

Semi-anthro is a thing, but it also doesn't apply to all uses of feral-style legs. Like I personally wouldn't consider middle example to be semi-anthro. Some satyrs are sort of extreme examples:
